The fortified island of 'Pampus'
Netherlands, Muiden. People visiting the fortified island of 'Pampus' nearby Amsterdam. Pampus used to be a shoal in the former Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer), facing the harbour of Amsterdam. The heavily loaded ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) moored here until it was their turn to unload their cargo. During the German-French war in 1870 the Defense Line of Amsterdam (The 'Stelling van Amsterdam') was build near Pampus. This fortress, finished in 1895, was part of it. It was used in the First World War.
